ETFGI reports assets invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in Japan reached a record US$572 billion at the end of September 2021

 

LONDONOctober 21, 2021 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs and ETPs ecosystem, reported today assets invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in Japan reached a record US$572 billion at the end of SeptemberETFs and ETPs listed in Japan gathered net inflows of US$1.62 billion during September, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$19.33 billion. Assets invested in the Japanese ETFs/ETPs industry have increased 3.4%, from US$554 billion at the end of August to US$572 billion, according to ETFGI's September 2021 Japanese ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

At the end of September 2021, the Japanese ETF/ETP industry had 242 ETFs/ETPs, with 276 listings, assets of
US$572 Bn, from 19 providers on 3 exchanges.

Highlights

  • Assets of $572 billion invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in Japan at the end of September 2021 are the highest on record.
  • The Bank of Japan held ETFs/ETPs assets of $323 Bn at the end of September.
  • $24.07 billion in net inflows gathered in the past 12 months.
  • Assets increased 7.1% YTD in 2021, going from US$535 billion at end of 2020, to US$572 billion.
  • Equity ETFs and ETPs listed in Japan gathered $22.95 Bn in YTD net inflows 2021.

 

“The S&P 500 declined 4.65% in September as due to fears of inflation, the ongoing Congressional budget impasse, and anticipation of a reduction in Fed liquidity provision.  Developed markets ex-U.S. declined 2.99% and emerging markets were down 3.12% in September.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder and owner of ETFGI.

Equity ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan had net inflows of $2.73 Bn during September, bringing net inflows for the year to September 2021 to $22.95 Bn, lower than the $53.88 Bn in net inflows equity products had for the year to September 2020. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan saw net inflows of $126 Mn during September, bringing net inflows for the year to September 2021 to $883 Mn, higher than the $331 Mn in net inflows fixed income products reported for the year to September 2020. Commodities ETFs /ETPs listed in Japan saw net outflows of $117 Mn during September 2021, taking net outflows for the year to September 2021 to $897 Mn, much lower than the $1.55 Bn in net inflows commodities products attracted in the same period last year. Leveraged Inverse ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan saw net inflows of $452 Mn over September, bringing net inflows for the year to September 2021 to $220 Mn, lower than the $1.01 Bn in net inflows leveraged inverse products had for the year to September 2020.

At the end of September 2021, the Bank of Japan held ETFs/ETPs assets of $323 Bn. During September 2021, the Bank of Japan purchased ETF/ETP assets of $1 Bn.

 

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $5.38 Bn during September, the MAXIS TOPIX ETF  (1348 JP) gathered $1.42 Mn the largest individual net inflow.
