ETFGI Press Release April 2014: Europe

According to ETFGI:  European listed ETFs and ETPs gathered a record level of US$9.2 billion in monthly net inflows in April which helped push assets to US$449.7 billion, a new record high, at the end of April 2014

LONDON — May 8th, 2014 — ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe gathered a record level of US$9.2 billion in monthly net new assets in April which, when combined with a small positive market performance in the month, pushed assets in the European ETF/ETP industry to a new record high of US$449.7 billion, according to preliminary data from ETFGI’s April 2014 ETF and ETP industry insights report. At the end of April 2014, the European ETF/ETP industry had 2,015 ETFs/ETPs, with 6,130 listings, from 50 providers listed on 25 exchanges across Europe.

The ETF/ETP industry globally hit a record high of US$2.49 trillion in assets at the end of April 2014.

“In April as was the case in March investors continued to show a strong preference to equity allocations. Equity markets were again choppy in April - the S&P 500 closed at an all-time high on April 2nd but ended the month up less than 1%. The DJIA closed the month at an all-time high of 16,581. Outside the U.S., developed markets improved slightly, European equities continued to strengthen, while emerging markets remained flat for the month.” according to Deborah Fuhr, Managing Partner at ETFGI.

In April 2014, ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe saw net inflows of US$9.2 Bn. Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with US$5.2 Bn, followed by fixed income ETFs/ETPs with US$2.9 Bn, and active ETFs/ETPs with US$460 Mn.

YTD through end of April 2014, ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe have seen net inflows of US$20.3 Bn which is significantly ahead of the US$6.9 Bn gathered at this time in 2013, the US$2.7 Bn gathered in 2012, as well as the US$11.0 gathered in 2011. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs have gathered the largest net inflows YTD with US$9.8 Bn, followed by equity ETFs/ETPs with US$8.7 Bn, and active ETFs/ETPs which have gathered net inflows of US$959 Mn YTD.

In April 2014, iShares gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows with US$2.6 Bn, followed by Source with US$1.7 Bn in net inflows, and DB x-trackers/DB ETCs with US$1.1 Bn in net inflows.
