ETFGI Press Release August 2014: Europe

ETFGI’s research shows assets invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe reached a new record high of 477.4 billion US dollars at the end of August 2014

LONDON — September 8th, 2014 — ETFGI’s research finds ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe reached a new record high of 477.4 billion US dollars at the end of August 2014. Year to date net new assets gathered of US$50.4 Bn is US$17.1 Bn greater than the previous full year record level of NNA gathered in 2012. At the end of August 2014 the European ETF/ETP industry had 2,061 ETFs/ETPs, with 6,232 listings, from 50 providers listed on 26 exchanges according to preliminary data from ETFGI’s end August 2014 Global ETF and ETP industry insights report.

New record highs in assets were reached at the end of August by ETF/ETP industries in Canada with US$67.9 Bn, Asia Pacific (ex-Japan) with US$103.7 Bn, Europe with US$477.4 Bn, the United States with US$1.91 Tn and globally with US$2.70 Tn. YTD NNA flows reached record levels for the ETF/ETP industries in Japan at US$16.5 Bn, Europe at US$50.4 Bn, the US at US$107.3 Bn and globally at US$185.0 Bn.

“In August investors invested net new money into an array of equity, fixed income and commodity exposures due to concerns over the situations in Ukraine and Gaza. The S&P 500 was up 4% in August and closed above the 2,000 threshold for the first time on August 26th. Developed markets were up slightly, emerging markets gained 3% and Latin America was up 9% in August. August was also a good month for fixed income.” according to Deborah Fuhr, Managing Partner at ETFGI.

In August 2014 ETFs/ETPs saw net inflows of US$7.7 Bn. Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with US$4.4 Bn, followed by fixed income ETFs/ETPs with US$2.8 Bn, and commodity ETFs/ETPs saw net inflows of US$132 Mn.

iShares gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows in August with US$3.3 Bn, followed by Vanguard with US$1.3 Bn, DB x Trackers with US$ 1.1Bn, Think ETFs with US$973 Mn, UBS GAM with US$ 585 Mn and HSBC with US$514 Mn in net inflows in August.

iShares is the largest ETF/ETP provider in terms of assets with US$223.4 Bn, reflecting 46.8% market share, db x/db ETC is second with US$56.0 Bn and 11.7% market share, followed by Lyxor AM with US$49.0 Bn and 10.3% market share. The top three ETF/ETP providers, out of 50, account for 68.8% of European ETF/ETP assets, while the remaining 47 providers each have less than 5% market share.
