ETFs/ETPs listed in Canada gathered net inflows of US$400 million in January 2015, according to ETFGI

LONDON — February 9, 2015 — ETFGI’s new research finds ETFs/ETPs listed in Canada gathered net inflows of US$400 Mn in January. The Canadian ETF industry had 347 ETFs, with 490 listings, assets of US$62 Bn, from 9 providers listed on 1 exchange at the end of January, according to preliminary data from ETFGI’s end January 2015 global ETF and ETP industry insights report.
 
In January, ETFs/ETPs saw net inflows of US$400 Mn. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with US$366 Mn, while equity ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows with US$118 Mn followed by commodities which recorded net outflows of US$8 Mn.
 
“Investors showed a strong preference for fixed income exposure during January as volatility increased. The S&P 500 was down 4%, developed markets were flat, emerging markets were down slightly while frontier markets where down 3% in January. The ECB announced on January 22nd a stimulus package which will total US$1.27 trillion based on buying US$69 billion a month in public and private bonds to stimulate the European economy.”, according to Deborah Fuhr, Managing Partner at ETFGI.
 
BMO AM gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows in January with US$737 Mn, followed by Vanguard with US$180 Mn, First Asset with US$79 Mn, RBC Global AM with US$51 Mn and Powershares with US$41 Mn in net inflows.
 
In January 2015, 6 new ETFs/ETPs were launched by 3 providers.  The top 100 ETFs/ETPs, out of 347, account for 85.5% of Canadian ETF/ETP assets with just 12 ETFs/ETPs having greater than US$1 Bn in assets.
