ETFGI Press Release August 2015: Europe

ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe are gathering net new assets 13 percent faster than in prior years according to ETFGI

LONDON —  August 10, 2015 — ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe are gathering net new assets 13% percent faster than in prior years according to ETFGI. A record level of US$48.4 billion in net new assets (NNA) was gathered by ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe in the first seven months of 2015, surpassing the prior record of US$42.9 billion gathered in the same period in 2014. At the end of July 2015, the European ETF/ETP industry had 2,135 ETFs/ETPs, with 6,534 listings, assets of US$504 Bn, from 50 providers listed on 25 exchanges in 21 countries, according to ETFGI’s preliminary ETF and ETP global insights report for July 2015.

The S&P 500 index ended up 2% for the month of July and finished the first seven months of 2015 up 3%. Although investors faced uncertainty in China and Greece during July they continued to invest significant net new assets in equity ETFs”, according to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner of ETFGI.

Record levels of net new assets (NNA) have also been gathered by ETFs/ETPs listed globally which have gathered US$199 billion in first seven months of 2015, surpassing the prior record of US$164 billion gathered in the same period in 2014. In the United States ETFs/ETPs have gathered net inflows of US$125 Bn, beating the previous record of US$116 Bn gathered in the first seven months of 2013, and ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan have gathered US$24 Bn which is significantly higher than the US$15 Bn gathered in the first seven months of 2014.

In July 2015, ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe gathered net inflows of US$8.4 Bn. Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with US$6.9 Bn, followed by fixed income ETFs/ETPs with US$2.1 Bn, while commodity ETFs/ETPs experienced net outflows with US$1.1 Bn.

Year to date (YTD) through end of July 2015, ETFs/ETPs have seen net inflows of US$48.4 Bn. Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows YTD with US$27.2 Bn, followed by fixed income ETFs/ETPs with US$17.5 Bn, and commodity ETFs/ETPs gathered net inflows of US$684 Mn.

iShares gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows in July with US$4.1 Bn, followed by db x/db ETC with US$1.6 Bn, Lyxor AM with US$1.0 Bn, Source with US$966 Mn and Vanguard with US$546 Mn in net inflows.

YTD, iShares gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows with US$18.5 Bn, followed by db x/db ETC with US$7.3 Bn, Lyxor AM with US$7.1 Bn, UBS ETFs with US$4.8 Bn and Vanguard with US$2.4 Bn in net inflows.
