ETFGI reports that assets invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe increased by a record US$194 billion during 2017, to a new high of US$766 billion at the end of October
LONDON — November 22, 2017 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm on trends in the global ETF/ETP ecosystem, reported today that assets invested in ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe increased by a record $194 billion during the first 10 months of 2017, to reach a new high of US$766 billion at the end of October.
According to ETFGI’s October 2017 Europe ETF and ETP industry insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service, assets invested in European-listed ETFs and ETPs grew by US$194 Bn year-to-date, the largest absolute annual increase on record; more than doubling the previous record increase of US$92 Bn for the whole of 2009. The increase of 33.8%, from US$573 Bn at the end of 2016 to a record high of US$766 Bn at the end of October 2017, also represents the greatest proportional annual increase in assets since 2009 when markets recovered following the 2008 financial crisis.
Year-to-date, through end of October 2017, ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe saw record net inflows of US$94.8 Bn; 70.1% more than net inflows for the whole of 2016, and 38% more than the previous YTD record for the same period of US$68.7 Bn set in October 2015. October 2017 also marked the 37th consecutive month of net inflows into European ETFs/ETPs, with US$9.07 Bn gathered during the month.
Almost one third of these flows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered US$29.9 Bn during 2017. The iShares JP Morgan EM Local Government Bond UCITS ETF (SEML LN) on its own accounted for net inflows of US$2.86 Bn.
