ETFGI reports record-breaking 2017 for Canada-listed ETFs with assets increasing 38% to reach a record 117 billion US dollars

LONDON — January 9, 2018 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm on trends in the global ETF/ETP ecosystem, reported today that assets invested in ETFs listed in Canada increased by 38.2% during 2017 to reach a new high of US$117 Bn at the end of December.

According to ETFGI’s December 2017 Canada ETF and ETP industry insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service, assets invested in Canadian-listed ETFs grew by a record US$32.3 Bn during 2017, eclipsing the previous record of US$19.8 Bn set in 2016. The increase of 38.2%, from US$84.6 Bn at the end of 2016, also represents the greatest growth in assets since 2009 when markets recovered following the 2008 financial crisis.

During 2017 ETFs listed in Canada saw record net inflows of US$18.9 Bn; 48.5% more than net inflows for 2016, and 44.3% more than the previous record set in 2015. The majority of these flows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered US$9.56 Bn during 2017. The BMO S&P/TSX Capped Composite Index ETF (ZCN CN) on its own accounted for net inflows of US$998 Mn.
