ETFGI reports assets invested in active ETFs and ETPs listed globally reach record high of US$82.95 Bn US dollars at the end of March 2018

LONDON — May 8, 2018 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm on trends in the global ETF/ETP ecosystem, reported today that assets invested in active ETFs and ETPs listed globally reached a record high of US$82.95 Bn at the end of March 2018; an increase in assets of US$2.86 Bn from the previous record of US$80.10 Bn set at the end of February 2018. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.) 
 
Highlights 

  • Assets invested in actively-managed ETFs/ETPs listed globally increased by $2.86 Bn during March to reach a new record high of $82.95 Bn 
  • In March 2018, actively-managed ETFs/ETPs listed globally saw record net inflows of $3.67 Bn 
  • March 2018 marked the 39th consecutive month of net inflows into active ETFs/ETPs listed globally

 
According to ETFGI’s March 2018 active ETF and ETP industry insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service, active ETFs and ETPs listed globally gathered $3.67 Bn in net inflows, bringing YTD net inflows to $9.36 Bn. This represents 93.79% more than the $4.83 Bn in net inflows at this point last year.

At the end of March 2018, the global active ETF/ETP industry had 473 ETFs/ETPs, with 570 listings, assets of US$82.95 Bn, from 98 providers on 18 exchanges in 15 countries. 
 
March 2018 marked the 39th consecutive month of net inflows into active ETFs/ETPs listed globally. The $3.67 Bn gathered during March was 110.50% more than the $1.74 Bn net inflows during this month last year. 
 
The majority of monthly net new inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively have gathered $5.93 Bn during 2018. The BMO Europe High Dividend Covered Call ETF (ZWP CN) on its own accounted for year-to-date net inflows of $783.98 Mn. 
 
Top 20 active ETFs by net new assets
 
Globally-listed active equity ETFs/ETPs gathered net inflows of $1.56 Bn during March, growing net inflows for 2018 to $3.25 Bn, which is more than the $698 Mn in net inflows at this point last year. Similarly, active fixed income ETFs and ETPs gathered net inflows of $1.80 Bn in February, bringing net inflows for 2018 to $5.16 Bn, which is greater than the $4.03 Bn in net inflows at this point last year.  
 
Investors have tended to invest in equity active ETFs in March 2018 with the BMO Europe High Dividend Covered Call ETF (ZWP CN) capturing most of the flows.

Previously Deborah Fuhr served as global head of ETF research and implementation strategy and as a managing director at BlackRock/Barclays Global Investors from 2008 – 2011. She also worked as a managing director and head of the investment strategy team at Morgan Stanley in London from 1997 – 2008, and as an associate at Greenwich Associates.
