ETFGI reports assets invested in ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan reached 311 billion US dollars at the end of April 2018

LONDON — June 5, 2018 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm on trends in the global ETF/ETP ecosystem, reported today that assets invested in ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan reached US$311.06 Bn at the end of April 2018. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

According to ETFGI’s April 2018 Japan ETF and ETP industry insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service, assets invested in ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan grew by $2.61 Bn or 0.8% in April, compared to a 3.7% increase in March.

At the end of April 2018, the Japanese ETF industry had 177 ETFs, with 191 listings, assets of $308.22 Bn, from 17 providers on 2 exchanges. At the end of April 2018, the Japanese ETF/ETP industry had 209 ETFs/ETPs, with 243 listings, assets of $311.06 Bn, from 19 providers on 2 exchanges.

April 2018 marked the 6th consecutive month of net inflows into ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan, with net inflows of $968 Mn that resulted in the lowest inflows gathered since October 2017.

The majority of net new inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $31.63 Bn during 2018. The TOPIX Exchange Traded Fund (1306 JP) on its own accounted for net inflows of $9.26 Bn.

Equity ETFs/ETPs listed in Japan gathered net inflows of $2.98 Bn during April, bringing net inflows for 2018 to $30.06 Bn, which is more than the $26.51 Bn in net inflows at this point last year. Leveraged ETFs and ETPs experienced outflows of $1.69 Bn during April, decreasing net inflows for 2018 to $2.12 Bn, which is more than the $212 Mn in net inflows at this point last year. 
 
Investors have tended to invest in core and market cap ETFs in April 2018, with the TOPIX Exchange Traded Fund (1306 JP) and Nikkei 225 Exchange Traded Fund (1321 JP) capturing most of the flows YTD.
