ETFGI reports that ETFs and ETPs listed in Canada gathered net inflows of $1.41 Bn US dollars during May 2018

LONDON — June 25, 2018 —  ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm on trends in the global ETF/ETP ecosystem, reported today that ETFs and ETPs listed in Canada gathered US$1.41 Bn in net inflows in May 2018. YTD 2018 net inflows are at US$7.97 Bn, which is less than the US$9.12 Bn in net inflows at this point last year. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)  
   

Highlights 

  • Net new assets gathered by ETFs/ETPs listed in Canada were $1.41 Bn in May  
  • May 2018 marked the 8th consecutive month of net inflows into ETFs/ETPs listed in Canada 
  • Assets invested in ETFs/ETPs listed in Canada increased by 1.49% during May from $119.43 Bn in April to $121.20 Bn at the end of May

According to ETFGI’s May 2018 Canada ETF and ETP industry insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service, assets invested in ETFs/ETPs listed in Canada increased by $1.77 Bn in May 2018. The increase of 1.49%, from $119.43 Bn at the end of April 2018 to $121.20 Bn, also represents the highest monthly growth in assets since February 2018, when assets decreased by 4.06% from $121.87 Bn to $116.93 Bn.

At the end of May 2018, the Canadian ETF industry had 614 ETFs, with 732 listings, assets of $121.20 Bn, from 28 providers on 2 exchanges. 
 
May 2018 marked the 8th consecutive month of net inflows into ETFs/ETPs listed in Canada, with $1.41 Bn gathered during the month.

The majority of the monthly net new inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $4.91 Bn during 2018. The BMO Europe High Dividend Covered Call ETF (ZWP CN) on its own has accounted for net inflows of $815 Mn.

Canadian-listed Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered net inflows of $982 Mn in May, bringing net inflows for 2018 to $4.89 Bn which is more than the $4.11 Bn in net inflows at this point last year. Fixed Income ETFs and ETPs suffered net outflows of $82 Mn in May, bringing net outflows for 2018 to $206 Mn which is less than the $2.94 Bn in net inflows at this point last year. 
 
Investors have tended to invest in Equity ETFs in May 2018 with the BMO Europe High Dividend Covered Call ETF (ZWP CN) capturing most of the flows.

Previously Deborah Fuhr served as global head of ETF research and implementation strategy and as a managing director at BlackRock/Barclays Global Investors from 2008 – 2011. She also worked as a managing director and head of the investment strategy team at Morgan Stanley in London from 1997 – 2008, and as an associate at Greenwich Associates.
