ETFGI reports that assets invested ETFs and ETPs listed in Canada reached a new record high of US$150.69 billion at the end of November 2019

LONDON— December 20, 2019 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs/ETPs ecosystem, reported today that ETFs listed in Canada gathered net inflows of US$3.39 billion at the end of November, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$17.55 billion. In the month, Canadian ETF assets increased by 3.4%, from US$145.69 billion in October to US$150.69 billion. At the end of November 2019, the Canadian ETFs/ETPs industry had 747 ETFs/ETPs, with 902 listings, from 36 providers on 2 exchanges. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

Highlights

  • Assets invested in the Canadian ETF/ETP industry reached a new record of $150.69 billion at the end of November.
  • Assets are up 30.5% year to date which is greater than the 21.9% CAGR over the past 10 years. 
  • The $3.39 billion in net inflows gathered in November is the highest monthly inflow on record. 
  • Year-to-date net inflows of $17.55 billion are the highest on record. 

“During November the S&P 500 gained 3.6% as global markets were resistant to fears of inflation and showed optimism on the trade talks.  Global equities as measured by the S&P Global BMI were up 2.5% and the 
S&P Emerging BMI gained 0.1%.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder and owner of ETFGI.

Equity ETFs/ETPs gained inflows of $1.66 billion in November, bringing net inflows for the year to November 2019 to $4.49 billion, lower than the $7.08 billion in net inflows equity products had attracted for the year to November 2018. Fixed Income ETFs/ETPs gathered net inflows of $971 million in November, bringing net inflows for the year to November 2019 to $4.57 billion, considerably higher than the $432 million in net inflows fixed income products had attracted by the end of November 2018. Active ETFs/ETPs attracted net inflows of $497 million in November, gathering the largest net inflows for the year in Canada of $7.89 billion.

 

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $2.86 billion in November, iShares S&P/TSX 60 Index Fund (XIU CN) gathered $545.04 million alone.
