ETFGI reports record net inflows of US$167 billion into ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe a 38% increase on the record for full year 2020
LONDON —November 18, 2021 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs and ETPs ecosystem, reported today record net inflows of US$ 167 billion US dollars into ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe a 38% increase on the record for full year 2020. ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe reported net inflows of US$12.21 billion during October, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$166.82 billion. Assets invested in the European ETFs/ETPs industry have increased by 4.5%, from US$1.50 trillion at the end of September, to
US$1.57 trillion, according to ETFGI's October 2021 European ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)
- Assets of $1.57 trillion invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe at the end of October 2021 are the highest on record.
- Record YTD 2021 net inflows of $166.82 Bn beating the prior record of $94.59 Bn gathered in YTD 2017.
- $166.82 Bn YTD net inflows are $46.89 Bn or 38% higher than the full year 2020 record net inflows $119.93 Bn.
- $211.99 billion in net inflows gathered in the past 12 months.
- Assets increased 22.2% YTD in 2021, going from US$1.28 trillion at end of 2020, to US$1.57 trillion.
- 19th month of consecutive net inflows
- Equity ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe gathered a record $121.45 Bn in YTD net inflows 2021.
“Due to strong corporate earnings the S&P 500 gained 7.01% in October and is up 24.04% year to date. Developed markets ex-U.S. experienced gains of 2.50% in October. Canada 7.46% and Sweden 7.21% were the leaders of the month while Japan suffer the biggest loss of 3.43%. Emerging markets were up by 1.00% during October. Peru (up 14.45%) and Egypt (up 10.76%) were the leaders, whilst Brazil (down 10.72%) and Chile (down 5.66%) were down the most.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder and owner of ETFGI.
Europe ETFs and ETPs asset growth as at the end of October 2021
At the end of October 2021, the European ETFs and ETPs industry had 2,512 products, with 9,843 listings, assets of US$1.57 Tn, from 87 providers listed on 29 exchanges in 24 countries.
Equity ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe reported net inflows of $11.23 Bn during October, bringing net inflows YTD to $121.45 Bn, much higher than the $21.17 Bn in net inflows equity products had attracted YTD in 2020. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe had net inflows of $1.15 Bn during October, taking net inflows for the year to $34.86 Bn, greater than the $32.93 Bn in net inflows fixed income products had reported at this point in 2020. Commodity ETFs/ETPs reported $712 Mn in net outflows, bringing net inflows to $1.61 Bn for 2021, which is lower than the $19.66 Bn in net inflows gathered over the same period in 2020. Active ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe reported net outflows of $173 Mn, bringing net inflows for the year 2021 to $4.91 Bn, significantly higher than the $1.04 Bn in net inflows active products had attracted year to date in 2020.
Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $9.16 Bn during October. iShares Core S&P 500 UCITS ETF - Acc (CSSPX SW) gathered $1.78 Bn the largest individual net inflow.
