ETFGI reports actively managed ETFs listed globally gathered net inflows of US$8.61 billion during August 2022

LONDON September 27, 2022 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs ecosystem, reported today that actively managed listed globally gathered net inflows of
US$8.61 billion during August, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$80.02 billion. Assets invested in actively managed ETFs decreased by 1.8%, from US$474 billion at the end of July 2022 to US$465 billion, according to ETFGI's August 2022 Active ETF and ETP industry landscape insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

Highlights

  •  Actively managed ETFs listed globally gathered  net inflows of $8.61 Bn during August 2022.
  • Year-to-date net inflows of $80.02 Bn in 2022 are the 2nd highest on record, after year-to-date net inflows in 2021 of $95.98 Bn.
  • 29th month of consecutive net inflows.
  • Assets of $465 Bn invested in actively managed ETFs and ETPs industry at the end of August 2022 are the second highest on record.

 

“The S&P 500 decreased by 4.08% in August and is down by 16.14% YTD in 2022. Developed markets excluding the US decreased by 4.39% in August and are down 19.53%  YTD in 2022. Sweden (down 10.80%) and Netherlands (down 9.52%) saw the largest decreases amongst the developed markets in August. Emerging markets increased by 1.46% during August but are down 15.23% YTD in 2022. Turkey (up 19.47%) and Pakistan (up 15.39%) saw the largest increases amongst emerging markets in August, while Poland (down 10.78%) and Czech Republic (down 8.75%) saw the largest decreases.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder and owner of ETFGI.


Growth in actively managed ETF and ETP assets as of the end of August 2022

 

At the end of August 2022, there were 1,696 actively managed ETFs listed globally with 2,163 listings, assets of $465 Bn, from 323 providers listed on 30 exchanges in 23 countries.

Equity focused actively managed ETFs/ETPs listed globally gathered net inflows of $4.78 Bn during August, bringing year to date net inflows to $52.30 Bn, higher than the $43.58 Bn in net inflows equity products had attracted at this point in 2021. Fixed Income focused actively managed ETFs/ETPs listed globally attracted net inflows of $2.72 Bn during August, bringing net inflows for the year through August 2022 to $15.78 Bn, lower than the $41.46 Bn in net inflows fixed income products had reported in Year-to-date 2021.

 

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 active ETFs/ETPs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $7.10 Bn during August. JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI US) gathered $1.28 Bn, the largest individual net inflow.
