ETFGI reports that ETFs industry in Canada gathered 2.07 billion US dollars in net inflows in October 2022

LONDON November 25, 2022 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs/ETPs ecosystem, reported today that the ETFs industry in Canada gathered net inflows of US$2.07 billion during October, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$21.65 billion. During the month, Canadian ETF assets increased by 6.0%, from US$226 billion at the end of September to US$239 billion, according to ETFGI's October 2022 Canadian ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

Highlights

  • ETFs industry in Canada gathered $2.07 Bn in net inflows in October.
  • YTD Net inflows of $21.65 Bn during 2022 are the third highest on record, after YTD net inflows of $38.01 Bn in 2021 and YTD net inflows of $25.95 Bn in 2020.
  • 4th month of net inflows.
  • Assets of $239 Bn invested in ETFs listed in Canada at the end of October 2022.

 

“The S&P 500 increased by 8.10 % in October but is down by 17.70% YTD in 2022. Developed markets excluding the US increased by 5.33% in October but are down 23.78% YTD in 2022. Norway (up 11.51%) and Ireland (up 10.52 %) saw the largest increases amongst the developed markets in October. Emerging markets decreased by 3.54% during October and are down 26.60% YTD in 2022. China (down 14.74%) saw the largest decrease amongst emerging markets in October.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder and owner of ETFGI.

The ETFs industry in Canada had 1,040 ETFs, with 1,317 listings, assets of $239 Bn, from 42 providers listed on 2 exchanges at the end of October.

During October, ETFs gathered net inflows of $2.07 Bn. Equity ETFs reported net inflows of $428 Mn during October, bringing YTD net inflows to $6.85 Bn, lower than the $16.83 Bn in net inflows equity products had attracted at this point in 2021. Fixed income ETFs had net inflows of $83 Mn during October, bringing net inflows for the year through October 2022 to $2.47 Bn, lower than the $4.96 Bn in net inflows fixed income products had attracted by the end of October 2021. Active ETFs attracted net inflows of $1.56 Mn over the month, gathering YTD net inflows of $11.88 Bn, slightly higher than the $11.42 Bn in net inflows active products had reported by the end of October 2021.  

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $2.99 Bn during October. BMO Ultra Short-Term Bond ETF (ZST CN) gathered $392 Mn, the largest individual net inflow.
