ETFGI reports the ETFs industry in the United States gathered US$90.66 billion in net inflows in October 2022

 

LONDONNovember 22, 2022 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs/ETPs ecosystem, reported today that the ETFs industry in the United States gathered net inflows of US$90.66 billion during October, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$502.72 billion. During the month, assets invested in US ETF/ETP industry increased by 7.2%, from US$5.91 trillion at the end of September to US$6.33 trillion in October 2022, according to ETFGI's October 2022 US ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

Highlights

  • ETFs industry in the United States gathered Net inflows of $90.66 Bn in October.
  • YTD net inflows of $502.72 Bn in 2022 are the second highest on record, after YTD net inflows of $732.73 Bn in 2021.
  • 6th month of consecutive net inflows.
  • Assets of $6.33 Tn invested in ETFs industry in the United States at the end of October.
  • Assets decreased 12.2% YTD in 2022, going from $7.21 Tn at end of 2021 to $6.33 Tn.

“The S&P 500 increased by 8.10 % in October but is down by 17.70% YTD in 2022. Developed markets excluding the US increased by 5.33% in October but are down 23.78% YTD in 2022. Norway (up 11.51%) and Ireland (up 10.52 %) saw the largest increases amongst the developed markets in October. Emerging markets decreased by 3.54% during October and are down 26.60% YTD in 2022. China (down 14.74%) saw the largest decrease amongst emerging markets in October.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder and owner of ETFGI.

 

Growth in US ETF and ETP assets as of the end of October 2022

 

The ETFs industry in the United States had 3,046 products, assets of US$6.332 trillion, from 266 providers listed on 3 exchanges at the end of October.

During October, ETFs/ETPs gathered net inflows of $90.66 Bn. Equity ETFs/ETPs gathered net inflows of $58.07 Bn during October, bringing YTD net inflows to $259.50 Bn, lower than the $499.47 Bn in net inflows equity products had attracted at this point in 2021. Fixed income ETFs/ETPs reported net inflows of $28.77 Bn during October, bringing net inflows for the year through October 2022 to $147.94 Bn, higher than the $143.34 Bn in net inflows fixed income products had attracted by the end of October 2021. Commodities ETFs/ETPs reported net outflows of $2.61 Bn during October, bringing YTD net outflows to $4.89 Bn, which is less than the $10.52 Bn in net outflows commodities products reported year to date in 2021. Active ETFs/ETPs attracted net inflows of $6.69 Bn over the month, gathering net inflows for the year in the US of $75.89 Bn, lower than the $89.99 Bn in net inflows active products had reported by the end of October 2021.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $42.58 Bn during October. SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY US) gathered $14.55 Bn, the largest individual net inflow.
