ETFGI reports the ETFs industry in Europe gathered net inflows of US$7.93 billion during May

LONDON — June 15, 2023 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs ecosystem, reported today that ETFs industry in Europe gathered net inflows of US$7.93 billion during May, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$61.89 billion. During the month, assets invested in the European ETF/ETP industry decreased by 1.4% from US$1.58 trillion at the end of April to US$1.56 trillion, according to ETFGI's May 2023 European ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

Highlights

  • ETFs industry in Europe gathered net inflows of $7.93 Bn in May.
  • YTD net inflows in 2023 of $61.89 Bn are third highest on record, after YTD net inflows of $95.18 Bn in 2021 and YTD net inflows of $68.77 in 2022.
  • 8th month of consecutive net inflows.
  • Assets of $1.56 Tn invested in ETFs industry in Europe at the end of May.
  • Assets increased 9.9% YTD in 2023, going from $1.42 Tn at end of 2022 to $1.56 Tn.

“The S&P 500 increased by 0.43% in May and is up by 9.65% YTD in 2023. Developed markets excluding the US declined by 4.26% in May but are up 4.41% in 2023. Belgium (down 11.16%) and Portugal (down 10.80%) saw the largest decreases amongst the developed markets in May. Emerging markets declined by 2.30% during May and are down 0.70% YTD in 2023. South Africa (down 14.46%) and Czech Republic (down 13.52%) saw the largest decreases amongst emerging markets in May.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI.

Europe ETFs and ETPs asset growth as at the end of May 2023

ETFs industry in Europe had 2,960 products, with 11,887 listings, assets of $1.559 trillion, from 98 providers listed on 29 exchanges in 24 countries at the end of May.

During May, ETFs gathered net inflows to $7.93 billion. Equity ETFs gathered net inflows of $2.62 Bn over May, bringing YTD net inflows to $30.11 Bn, much lower than the $47.03 Bn in net inflows equity products had attracted at this point in 2022. Fixed income ETFs reported net inflows of $4.83 Bn during May, bringing YTD net inflows for in  2023 to $27.19 Bn, higher than the $13.04 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022. Commodities ETFs/ETPs reported net outflows of $23 Mn during May, bringing YTD net inflows to $1.62 Bn, much lower than the $7.65 Bn in net inflows year to date in 2022. Active ETFs attracted net inflows of $602 Mn during the month, gathering net inflows YTD of  $2.92 Bn, much higher than the $714 Mn in net inflows YTD in 2022.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $8.69 Bn during May. Xtrackers II EUR Overnight Rate Swap UCITS ETF 1C - Acc (XEON GY) gathered $849.85 Mn, the largest individual net inflow.
