ETFGI reports the ETFs industry in the United States gathered net inflows of US$44.05 in May

LONDONJune 16, 2023 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs ecosystem, reported today that ETFs industry in the United States gathered net inflows of US$44.05 billion during May, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$154.34 billion.  Year-to-date, assets increased 6.9%, going from US$6.51 trillion at end of 2022 to US$6.96 trillion at the end of May, according to ETFGI's May 2023 US ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

Highlights

  • ETFs industry in the United States gathered net inflows of $44.05 Bn in May
  • YTD net inflows of $154.34 Bn are the fourth highest on record, the highest YTD net inflows were $399.09 Bn YTD in 2021 and YTD net inflows of $263.44 Bn in 2022.
  • 13th month of consecutive net inflows.
  • Assets of $6.96 Tn invested in ETFs industry in the United States at the end of May 
  • Assets increased 6.9% YTD in 2023, going from $6.51 Tn at end of 2022 to $6.96 Tn.

“The S&P 500 increased by 0.43% in May and is up by 9.65% YTD in 2023. Developed markets excluding the US declined by 4.26% in May but are up 4.41% in 2023. Belgium (down 11.16%) and Portugal (down 10.80%) saw the largest decreases amongst the developed markets in May. Emerging markets declined by 2.30% during May and are down 0.70% YTD in 2023. South Africa (down 14.46%) and Czech Republic (down 13.52%) saw the largest decreases amongst emerging markets in May.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI.

Growth in US ETF and ETP assets as of the end of May 2023

The ETFs industry in the United States had 3,167 products, assets of $6.955 trillion, from 285 providers on 3 exchanges at the end of May.

During May, ETFs gathered net inflows of $44.05 Bn. Equity ETFs gathered net inflows of $21.59 Bn during May, bringing YTD net inflows to $33.52 Bn, significantly lower than the $132.59 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022. Fixed income ETFs had net inflows of $12.98 Bn during May, bringing YTD net inflows to $73.80 Bn, higher than the $60.02 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022. Commodities ETFs/ETPs reported net inflows of $1.23 Bn during May, bringing YTD net inflows to $2.44 Bn, significantly lower than the $12.29 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022. Active ETFs attracted net inflows of $9.41 Bn over the month, gathering YTD net inflows of $41.91 Bn, slightly lower than the $43.10 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $51.50 Bn during May. Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (SPY US) gathered $18.23 Bn, the largest individual net inflow.
