ETFGI reports global ETFs industry celebrated 4 years of consecutive monthly net inflows at the end of May

LONDON — June 13, 2023 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs ecosystem, reported today the global ETFs industry celebrated 48 months or 4 years of consecutive monthly net inflows at the end of May. The global ETFs industry gathered US$75.09 billion in net inflows in May 2023, bringing year to date net inflows to US$273.12 Bn. During May 2023, assets have increased 7.5% YTD in 2023, going from $9.26 Tn at end of 2022 to $9.95 Tn., according to ETFGI's May 2023 global ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted)

Highlights

  • Global ETFs industry celebrated 48th months or 4 years of consecutive net inflows at end of May.
  • Net inflows of $75.09 Bn during May.
  • YTD net inflows of $273.12 Bn are the fourth highest on record, after YTD net inflows of $572.08 Bn in 2021, YTD net inflows of $417.50 Bn in 2022 and YTD net inflows of $284.02 Bn in 2017.
  • Assets of $9.95 Tn invested in Global ETFs industry at the end of May.
  • Assets increased 7.5% YTD in 2023, going from $9.26 Tn at end of 2022 to $9.95 Tn.
  • Equity ETFs and ETPs listed globally saw $35.58 Bn in net inflows in May 2023.

“The S&P 500 increased by 0.43% in May and is up by 9.65% YTD in 2023. Developed markets excluding the US declined by 4.26% in May but are up 4.41% in 2023. Belgium (down 11.16%) and Portugal (down 10.80%) saw the largest decreases amongst the developed markets in May. Emerging markets declined by 2.30% during May and are down 0.70% YTD in 2023. South Africa (down 14.46%) and Czech Republic (down 13.52%) saw the largest decreases amongst emerging markets in May.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI.

Global ETF and ETP assets as of the end of May 2023

At the end of May, 2023 the Global ETFs industry had 11,370 products, with 23,169 listings, assets of $9.954 Tn, from 687 providers listed on 82 exchanges in 63 countries.

During May, ETFs gathered net inflows of $75.09 Bn. Equity ETFs reported net inflows of $35.58 Bn over May, bringing YTD net inflows to $89.79 Bn, significantly lower than the $245.44 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022. Fixed income ETFs had net inflows of $23.29 Bn during May, bringing YTD net inflows to $117.47 Bn, higher than the $80.45 Bn in net inflows YTD 2022. Commodities ETFs/ETPs reported net inflows of $1.37 Bn during May, bringing YTD net inflows to $4.89 Bn, significantly lower than the $17.70 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022. Active ETFs attracted net inflows of $15.23 Bn during the month, gathering YTD net inflows $58.77 Bn, slightly higher than the $54.97 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $54.48 Bn during May. SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY US) gathered $18.23 Bn, the largest individual net inflow.
