ETFGI reports assets of US$306.69 billion invested in ETFs listed globally providing exposure to China at the end of February

LONDONMarch 28, 2024 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs ecosystem, reported assets of US$306.69 billion invested in ETFs listed globally providing exposure to China at the end of February. ETFs and ETPs listed globally providing exposure to China gathered net inflows of US$25.55 billion during February. Total assets invested in ETFs listed globally providing exposure to China have increased year-to-date by 20.7% from US$254.06 billion at the end of January 2024 to US$306.69 billion, according to ETFGI’s February 2024 ETF and ETP China industry landscape insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)


Highlights

  • Assets of $306.69 Bn invested in ETFs listed globally providing exposure to China at the end of February.
  • Assets have increased by 20.7% YTD, going from $254.06 Bn at end of 2023 to $306.69 Bn.
  • Net inflows of $25.55 Bn during February.
  • YTD net inflows of $45.95 Bn are the highest on record, followed by $20.29 Bn YTD net inflows for 2022 are the second highest record, and $6.86 bn YTD net inflows for 2020 are the third highest record.
  • 4th month of net inflows.

“The S&P 500 index increased by 5.34% in February and is up by 7.11% YTD. Developed markets excluding the US increased by 1.90% in February and are up 1.58% YTD. Ireland (up 8.60%) and Israel (up 8.27%) saw the largest increases amongst the developed markets in February. Emerging markets increased by 4.18% during February and are up 0.57% YTD. China (up 8.41%) and Peru (up 7.12%) saw the largest increases amongst emerging markets in February”, according to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI.

Since the launch of the first China exposure ETF in 2001, the iShares MSCI China Index ETF, the number and diversity of products have increased steadily.  At the end of February, there were 1,051 ETFs listed globally providing exposure to China, with assets of $306.69 Bn.  

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $29.44 Bn during February. China CSI 500 ETF - Acc (510500 CH) gathered $4.03 Bn, the largest individual net inflow.
