ETFGI reports 28 of the top 50 overseas securities purchased by Korean retail investors in August were ETFs listed in the United States and Japan

LONDONSeptember 16, 2024 ETFGI, a prominent independent research, events and consultancy firm specializing in providing subscription research on trends in the global ETFs industry, reported today that in August, 28 of the top 50 overseas securities purchased by Korean retail investors were ETFs listed in the United States and Japan. The number of ETFs on the list increased by 1 from 27 in July 2024, it is up by 2 from 26 in June 2024, and it is up by 5 from 23 in May 2024. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted)

 

Highlights

  • 28 of the top 50 overseas securities purchased by Korean retail investors in August were ETFs listed in the United States and Japan 
  • Seventeen of the twenty-eight ETFs on the top 50 list provide leverage or inverse exposure.
  • The largest purchase was US$3.81 billion of the Direxion Daily Semiconductors Bull 3X SHS ETF listed in the United States.

The ETFs industry in Korea has 1,284 products, with assets of $129.96 billion, from 36 providers listed on the Korea Exchange at the end of August. According to data from ETFGI, 26.01 percent of the ETFs provide leverage or inverse exposure which account for 9.80% of the assets in the ETFs industry in Korea.
