
ETFGI reports the global ETFs industry gathered a record 1.88 trillion US dollars during 2024

LONDON — January 16, 2025 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm renowned for its expertise in subscription research, consulting services, events, and ETF TV on global ETF industry trends, reported today the global ETFs industry gathered a record US$1.88 trillion during 2024. During December the global ETFs industry gathered US$207.73 billion in net inflows, bringing 2024 net inflows to US$1.88 trillion, according to ETFGI's December 2024 global ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted)
Highlights
- Global ETFs industry gathered a record $1.88 Tn in net inflows in 2024, the second highest recorded full year net inflows was $1.29 Tn in 2021 and the third highest recorded full year net inflows was $974.50 Bn in 2023.
- Assets of $14.85 Tn invested in the global ETFs industry at the end of 2024 are the second highest on record, below the record high assets of $15.12 Tn in November 2024.
- 67th month of consecutive net inflows.
- Assets increased 27.6% in 2024, going from $11.63 Tn at end of 2023 to $14.85 Tn.
“The S&P 500 index decreased by 2.38% in December but was up by 25.02% in 2024. The developed markets excluding the US index decreased by 2.78% in December but is up 3.81% in 2024. Denmark (down 12.34%) and Australia (down 7.90%) saw the largest decreases amongst the developed markets in December. The emerging markets index increased by 0.19% during December and is up 11.96% in 2024. United Arab Emirates (up 6.42%) and Greece (up 4.21%) saw the largest increases amongst emerging markets in December”, according to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI.
Asset growth in the global ETFs industry as of the end of December
The global ETFs industry had 13,198 products, with 26,244 listings, assets of $14.85 Tn, from 814 providers listed on 81 exchanges in 63 countries at the end of December.
During December, ETFs gathered net inflows of $207.73 Bn. Equity ETFs reported net inflows of $151.58 Bn in December, bringing 2024 net inflows to $1.11 Tn, much higher than the $532.28 Bn in net inflows in 2023. Fixed income ETFs gathered net inflows of $16.14 Bn during December, bringing net inflows for to $314.32 Bn, higher than the $272.90 Bn in net inflows in 2023. Commodities ETFs reported net outflows of $1.11 Bn during December, bringing 2024 net inflows to $3.91 Bn, higher than the $16.88 Bn in net outflows in 2023. Active ETFs attracted net inflows of $41.78 Bn in December, bringing 2024 net inflows to $374.30 Bn, much higher than the $184.07 Bn in net inflows in 2023.
Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $99.50 Bn during December. iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV US) gathered $23.14 Bn, the largest individual net inflow.
