ETFGI reports that assets invested in the ETFs industry in Europe reached a new record of US$2.87 trillion at the end of August

LONDON September 12, 2025 — ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm renowned for its expertise in subscription research, consulting services, events, and ETF TV on global ETF industry trends, reported today that assets in the ETFs industry in Europe reached a new record of US$2.87 trillion at the end of August. During August the ETFs industry in Europe gathered net inflows of US$33.71 billion, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$240.99 billion, according to ETFGI's August 2025 European ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. Europe ETF Industry Highlights – August 2025
Assets invested in the European ETF industry reached a new record of $2.87 trillion at the end of August 2025, surpassing the previous high of $2.76 trillion set just a month earlier in July. This represents a 26.2% increase year-to-date, with assets rising from $2.27 trillion at the end of 2024.

In August alone, the industry recorded net inflows of $33.71 billion. Year-to-date net inflows now total $240.99 billion, marking the highest level on record. For comparison, the second-highest YTD net inflows were $151.97 billion in 2024, followed by $138.94 billion in 2021.

August also marked the 35th consecutive month of net inflows, underscoring the sustained investor demand for ETFs in Europe.

Equity ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe have been the primary driver of growth, attracting $163.15 billion in net inflows year-to-date—also a record. The previous highest YTD equity inflows were $106.93 billion in 2024 and $101.10 billion in 2021.

iShares remains the largest ETF provider in Europe by assets under management, with US$1.18 trillion, representing a 41.1% market share. Amundi ETF ranks second with US$350.88 billion in assets and a 12.2% share, followed by Xtrackers in third place with US$303.04 billion and a 10.6% share. Collectively, these top three providers—out of a total of 129—account for 63.8% of the total assets under management in the European ETF industry.

“The S&P 500 index rose 2.03% in August, bringing its year-to-date gain to 10.79%. Developed markets excluding the US index advanced 4.29% during the month, and are now up 24.56% year-to-date. Among developed markets, Denmark (+6.37%) and Japan (+6.24%) experienced the largest declines in August. Emerging markets index posted a 2.48% gain in August, with year-to-date performance reaching +16.04%. Chile (+9.63%) and Brazil (+8.46%) led the gains among emerging markets during the month.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI.

The ETFs industry in Europe has 3,333 products, with 14,129 listings, assets of $2.87 Tn, from 129 providers listed on 29 exchanges in 24 countries at the end of August.

Net Inflows in the ETFs industry in Europe – August 2025
During August, ETFs in Europe recorded net inflows of $33.71 billion. Equity ETFs led the way, attracting $18.85 billion in net inflows for the month, bringing year-to-date net inflows to $163.15 billion—significantly higher than the $106.93 billion gathered by equity products over the same period in 2024.

Fixed income ETFs saw $8.14 billion in net inflows during August, pushing their year-to-date total to $44.07 billion, which exceeds the $41.59 billion recorded by the end of August 2024.

Commodities ETFs reported $2.51 billion in net inflows for the month, bringing year-to-date inflows to $10.47 billion, a notable turnaround from the $4.93 billion in net outflows reported year-to-date in 2024.

Active ETFs attracted $4.43 billion in net inflows during August, with year-to-date inflows reaching $21.21 billion, more than double the $8.77 billion gathered over the same period in 2024. 

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $13.83 Bn in August. iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF (IWDA LN) gathered $1.29 Bn, the largest individual net inflow.

The top 10 ETPs by net new assets collectively gathered $2.43 Bn during August. iShares Physical Gold ETC (SGLN LN) gathered $877.21 Mn, the largest individual net inflow.
