Does Past Performance Matter For Mutual Funds?

Read the fine print in the fact sheet for your favorite mutual fund and you will find a phrase that reads something like this: “Past performance is no guarantee of future results.” The SEC requires this disclaimer. But it is more than just boiler plate. Typically, some kind of performance data will play a prominent role in a fund’s marketing literature. It makes sense given that investors are attracted to strong performance numbers.
