ETFGI reports ETFs industry in the United States gathered net inflows of US$39.25 billion in September

London - (ETFGI) October 30, 2023 – ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm covering trends in the global ETFs ecosystem, reported today the ETFs industry in the United States gathered net inflows of US$39.25 billion in September, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$339.30 billion.   Assets increased 10.1% YTD in 2023, going from $6.51 Tn at end of 2022 to $7.16 Tn. , according to ETFGI's September 2023 US ETFs and ETPs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.

Highlights

  • ETFs industry in the United States gathered net inflows of US$39.25 billion in September. 
  • YTD net inflows of $339.30 Bn are the third highest on record, the highest YTD net inflows were $650.04 Bn for 2021 and 1st YTD net inflows were $412.07 Bn in 2022. 
  • 17th month of consecutive net inflows. 
  • Assets of $7.16 Tn invested in ETFs and ETPs listed in US at the end of September 2023. 
  • Assets increased 10.1% YTD in 2023, going from $6.51 Tn at end of 2022 to $7.16 Tn. 
  • Equity ETFs and ETPs listed in the US gathered net inflows of $21 Bn in September 2023.  

“The S&P 500 decreased by 4.77% in September and is up 13.07% YTD in 2023. Developed markets excluding the US decreased by 3.54% in September and are up 6.66% YTD in 2023. Netherlands (down 7.90%) and Ireland (down 7.31%) saw the largest decreases amongst the developed markets in September. Emerging markets decreased by 1.86% during September but are up 3.47% YTD in 2023. Thailand (down 9.38%) and Poland (down 9.33%) saw the largest decreases amongst emerging markets in September.” According to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI. 

ETFs industry in the United States assets growth as of the end of September 

ETFs industry in the United States had 3,275 products, assets of $7.16 Tn, from 298 providers listed on 3 exchanges at the end of September.

During September, ETFs gathered net inflows of $39.25 Bn. Equity ETFs gathered net inflows of $21 Bn during September, bringing YTD net inflows to $141.78 Bn, significantly lower than the $201.42 Bn in YTD net inflows in 2022. Fixed income ETFs had net inflows of $7.09 Bn during September, bringing YTD net inflows $117.03 Bn, lower than the $118.35 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022. Commodities ETFs/ETPs reported net outflows of $1.97 Bn during September, bringing YTD net outflows to $6.79 Bn, significantly lower than the $2.28 Bn in net outflows YTD in 2022. Active ETFs attracted net inflows of $11.83 Bn in September, gathering YTD net inflows of $84.46 Bn, much higher than the $70.02 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2022.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $36.88 Bn during September. SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY US) gathered $9.43 Bn, the largest individual net inflow.
