ETFGI reports assets invested in the ETFs industry in the United States reached a new record high of 9.74 trillion US Dollars at the end of August

LONDONSeptember 16, 2024 ETFGI, a prominent independent research, events and consultancy firm specializing in providing subscription research on trends in the global ETFs industry, reports assets invested in the ETFs industry in the United States reached a new record high of US$9.74 trillion at the end of August. The industry gathered net inflows of US$66.31 billion during August, bringing year-to-date net inflows to a record US$643.52 billion, according to ETFGI's August 2024 US ETFs industry landscape insights report, the monthly report which is part of an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

Highlights

  • Assets invested in the ETFs industry in the United States reached a record of $9.74 Tn at the end of August beating the previous record of $9.49 Tn at the end of July 2024.
  • Assets have increased 20.1% YTD in 2024, going from $8.11 Tn at end of 2023 to $9.74 Tn.
  • Net inflows of $66.31 Bn gathered in August.
  • YTD net inflows of $643.52 Bn are the highest on record, followed by YTD net inflows of $594.42 Bn in 2021 and the third highest recorded YTD net inflows were $386.22 Bn in 2022.
  • 28th month of consecutive net inflows.

 

“The S&P 500 index increased by 2.43% in August and is up by 19.53% YTD in 2024. The developed markets excluding the US index increased by 2.78% in August and is up 11.13% YTD in 2024. Israel (up 7.47%) and Singapore (up 5.59%) saw the largest increases amongst the developed markets in August. The Emerging markets index increased by 2.01% during August and is up 10.89% YTD in 2024. Indonesia (up 10.79%) and Thailand (up 8.62%) saw the largest increases amongst emerging markets in August”, according to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI.

The ETFs industry in the United States had 3,669 products, assets of US$9.74 Tn, from 337 providers listed on 3 exchanges at the end of August.

During August, ETFs gathered net inflows of $66.31 Bn. Equity ETFs gathered net inflows of $18.73 Bn in August, bringing YTD net inflows to $288.66 Bn, much higher than the YTD $120.78 Bn in net in 2023. Fixed income ETFs had net inflows of $25.61 Bn during August, bringing YTD net inflows to $129.54 Bn, higher than the YTD $109.87 Bn in net inflows in 2023. Commodities ETFs reported net inflows of $715.56 Mn during August, bringing YTD net outflows to $1.73 Bn, less than the $5.80 Bn in net outflows YTD in 2023. Active ETFs attracted net inflows of $20.67 Bn during the month, gathering YTD net inflows of $180.40 Bn, much higher than the $74.20 Bn in net inflows YTD in 2023.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETF‘s by net new assets, which collectively gathered $46.13 Bn in August. Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO US) gathered $7.88 Bn, the largest individual net inflow.
