ETFGI reports the ETFs industry in Japan gathered net inflows of 3.76 billion US dollars during August

LONDONSeptember 17, 2024 ETFGI, a prominent independent research, events and consultancy firm specializing in providing subscription research on trends in the global ETFs industry, reported today that the ETFs industry in Japan gathered net inflows of US$3.76 billion during August, bringing year-to-date net inflows to US$9.80 billion, according to ETFGI's August 2024 Japanese ETFs industry landscape insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

Highlights

  • Net inflows of $3.76 Bn in August 2024.
  • YTD net inflows in 2024 of $9.80 Bn are ninth highest on record, while the highest recorded YTD net inflows are of $55.07 Bn in 2020, followed by YTD net inflows of $46.59 Bn in 2018 and YTD net inflows of $42.14 Bn in 2017.
  • 3rd month of consecutive net inflows.
  • Assets of $595.00 Bn invested in the ETFs industry in Japan at the end of August.
  • Assets invested in the ETFs industry in Japan at $595.00 billion at the end of August are the 2nd highest on record, the highest recorded level was $595.83 billion at the end of March 2024.
  • Assets increased 11.2% YTD in 2024, going from $535.00 Bn at end of 2023 to $595.00 Bn.

“The S&P 500 index increased by 2.43% in August and is up by 19.53% YTD in 2024. The developed markets excluding the US index increased by 2.78% in August and is up 11.13% YTD in 2024. Israel (up 7.47%) and Singapore (up 5.59%) saw the largest increases amongst the developed markets in August. The Emerging markets index increased by 2.01% during August and is up 10.89% YTD in 2024. Indonesia (up 10.79%) and Thailand (up 8.62%) saw the largest increases amongst emerging markets in August”, according to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI.

The ETFs industry in Japan had 344 products, with 366 listings, assets of US$595.00 Bn, from 15 providers listed on 2 exchanges at the end of August.

The industry gathered net inflows of $3.76 Bn in August.   Equity ETFs reported net inflows of $3.17 Bn in August, bringing YTD net inflows to $6.99 Bn, higher than the YTD $2.13 Bn in net inflows in 2023. Fixed income ETFs gathered net inflows of $125.63 Mn during August, bringing YTD net inflows to $1.28 Bn, slightly lower than the YTD $1.66 Bn in net inflows in 2023. Commodities ETFs reported highest recorded net inflows of $120.40 Mn during August, bringing YTD net inflows to $526.80 Mn, higher than the YTD $88.86 Mn in net inflows in 2023.

 

At the end of August the Bank of Japan held $245 billion worth of ETFs.

Substantial inflows can be attributed to the top 20 ETF's by net new assets, which collectively gathered $3.24 Bn in August. NEXT FUNDS Nikkei 225 Exchange Traded Fund (1321 JP) gathered $412.81 Mn, the largest individual net inflow.
