Short summary of the Smart Beta ETF/ETP landscape based on the responses of index providers classifying their own indices that are used as benchmarks by ETFs/ETPs.
Smart Beta (often referred to as advanced beta, strategic beta and alternative beta) does not have a standard definition and as such continues to raise confusion even among investment professionals. In order to provide clarity to this ambiguous term and be able to map the smart beta ETF/ETP landscape we recently conducted a survey among index providers where we asked them to classify the indices that they have licensed to ETF/ETP providers into 3 categories: 1) Smart Beta, 2) market cap and 3) other types of indices.
