ETFGI reports that ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe gathered net inflows of US$661 million during June 2018, the lowest net inflows since May 2015

LONDON — July 31, 2018   ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm on trends in the global ETF/ETP ecosystem, reported today that ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe gathered net new assets of US$661 million during June 2018, marking the 45th consecutive month of net inflows. These were the lowest net inflows since May 2015. (All dollar values in USD unless otherwise noted.)

   Highlights 

  • ETFs and ETPs listed in Europe gathered net new assets of $661 Mn during June 2018, marking the 45th consecutive month of net inflows.
  • Fixed Income products gathered the largest net inflows during June, while Equity ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows.
  • ETF/ETP assets have decreased by 1.01% during June to $811 Bn.

The S&P 500 was up 0.62% in June and 2.65% in the first half of 2018. International markets (developed ex US) and Emerging markets posted losses during June and during the first half of 2018, down 1.48% and 3.40% in June and 2.45% and 6.05% in the first half, respectively, driven by a strong dollar, trade concerns, and rising interest rates.

According to ETFGI’s June 2018 Europe ETF and ETP industry insights report, an annual paid-for research subscription service, equity products experienced the largest net outflows during June with net outflows of $963 Mn, while Fixed Income ETFs/ETPs gathered the largest net inflows with $1.65 Bn.
 
Year-to-date through end of June, ETFs/ETPs listed in Europe have seen net inflows of $33.1 Bn. Equity products gathered the largest net inflows year-to-date with $22.7 Bn, while Leveraged ETFs/ETPs experienced the largest net outflows with $756 Mn.

At the end of June 2018, the Europe ETF/ETP industry had 2,307 ETFs/ETPs, with 7,732 listings, assets of $811 Bn, from 66 providers on 27 exchanges.
 
ETF/ETP assets have decreased by 1.01% from $820 Bn at the end of June, and increased by 1.10% year-to-date from $802 Bn at the end of 2017.
 
Investors have tended to invest in core, market cap and lower cost ETFs during 2018, with the iShares Core S&P 500 UCITS ETF (CSSPX SW) and iShares Core MSCI EM IMI UCITS ETF (EMIM LN) both capturing flows of $1.74 Bn. A high proportion of net inflows year-to-date can be attributed to the top 20 ETFs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $16.8 Bn.

Previously Deborah Fuhr served as global head of ETF research and implementation strategy and as a managing director at BlackRock/Barclays Global Investors from 2008 – 2011. She also worked as a managing director and head of the investment strategy team at Morgan Stanley in London from 1997 – 2008, and as an associate at Greenwich Associates.
